Lighting keypads in Surrey, or anywhere else, are the part of a lighting system that people touch every day, so they need to be clear, well made and easy to read in a dark room. These photographs, taken on 31 July 2021 in a Surrey house, show two engraved keypads, a chandelier and a floor light.
Keypads with every zone named
Both keypads have a polished chrome plate and black buttons with the area engraved on each one. The first has Reception 1, 2 and 3, Bar, Foyer, Reception, Garden 1 and 2, arrow buttons to raise and lower, and a pair marked Open and Close. In the photo its engraving is lit blue, so every label can be read in a dark room.
The second keypad works by floor and zone, with Ground 1, 2 and 3, Garden 1 and 2, First, Second, Basement, All Hallways, Gate and Porch, and All On and All Off at the foot of each column. Between them, the two keypads reach from the basement to the gate.
A chandelier and a floor light
The chandelier is hung with crystal drops and carries a large number of lamps under cream pleated shades, filling a room of dark wood and patterned sofas with warm light. At floor level, a small round LED is set into an oak floor beside a gold glitter column. A lighting control system can set each light like these to the level the room needs, whether that is a bright chandelier for guests or a soft glow for the evening.
Planning lighting keypads
Decide what each button should do before the keypads are ordered, because engraved buttons are made to order and are awkward to change afterwards. Name buttons after the rooms people use rather than after circuits, keep each column short enough to read at a glance, and put All On and All Off where they are easy to find. Our lighting control in Surrey page, our lighting control overview and our home automation in Surrey page explain the options.
