Boardroom Audio System for London Offices: Table Microphones and a Biamp Rack

A boardroom audio system with microphone units running down both sides of a long timber table, and the Zoom Rooms start screen on the twin displays

In a large boardroom, a boardroom audio system has one job above all: every voice around the table should reach the far end of the room, and the far end of a call, at the same level. This room was photographed on 23 and 24 March 2023, while we were finishing and testing it, and it does that job with microphone units on the table and a rack of processing in a cupboard nearby.

Microphones on the table, not in the ceiling

Ceiling microphones keep a table clear, but in a room this long a microphone in front of each person picks up voices more cleanly. Here each unit has a gooseneck microphone, a small display with buttons and a speaker grille, and the units run down both sides of the timber table and across the end beneath the screens. A lectern at the front has a gooseneck of its own for whoever stands to speak.

Handheld microphones for presenters

Two Shure handheld wireless microphones live on a charging dock on a shelf in the rack, so they are charged whenever someone wants to walk and talk.

Inside the rack

Equipment Its part in the room
Crestron CP3N The control processor
Netgear AV Line switch The network for the AV equipment
Two Haivision units Video streaming
Shure charging dock Keeps the two handheld microphones ready
Three Extron DTP transmitters and an Extron DTP CrossPoint 84 Switching between eight inputs and four outputs
Two HP Elite Mini computers Small PCs on their own shelf
Biamp TesiraFORTÉ X 1600 and X 800 Audio processing
Two Biamp TesiraXEL 1200.1 Amplifiers for the speakers

Vented blanking panels sit between the units, two fans in the roof of the rack move warm air out, and the cables at the back are tied in and labelled.

Planning a boardroom audio system in London

  1. Count the people who speak in a meeting, not just the seats.
  2. Choose table, ceiling or handheld microphones for each part of the room.
  3. Use a processor with echo cancellation if the room joins calls.
  4. Give the rack a ventilated cupboard close to the room.

Biamp's TesiraFORTÉ X notes explain the processor range used here. Our audio conferencing, conference room, video conferencing and Crestron pages cover the rest.
