1Install is a certified KNX Partner and KNX installer for homes across Portsmouth, Hampshire. We design, wire, programme and support KNX systems that run lighting, heating, blinds and much more on one open standard, so your house is never tied to a single brand or a single installer.
KNX is the worldwide standard for home and building control. Every switch, sensor, dimmer and blind motor sits on one green bus cable and speaks the same language, so a keypad from one maker can dim lights from another and move blinds from a third. The KNX Association counts more than 500 manufacturers and over 8,000 certified products, and the standard has been trusted for more than 30 years.
Why choose KNX for your home
- Open, not proprietary. Every certified KNX installer uses the same ETS software, so the system is never locked to one company.
- No single point of failure. Each KNX device carries its own intelligence, so if one module fails the rest of the house carries on as normal.
- Made to last. KNX products from different years and different makers work together, which suits a house you plan to keep.
- Your choice of design. Keypads and switches from makers such as Gira, Jung, ABB, Schneider Electric and Basalte, in finishes to suit any interior.
- Efficient by design. Presence detectors, window contacts and room by room heating control mean lights and heating run only where they are needed.
What our KNX installer team designs and installs
- Lighting: switching, dimming, DALI and colour changing circuits, with scenes on every keypad. See lighting control.
- Heating and cooling: underfloor heating, radiators, heat pumps and air conditioning, controlled room by room.
- Blinds, curtains and shutters: motorised and linked to a weather station, so blinds close on a hot afternoon. See motorised blinds.
- Presence and safety: motion and presence detectors, window contacts, leak sensors and a single All off at the front door.
- Energy: metering and load control, so you can see where the power goes.
- Apps and voice: Apple Home, Google Home and Amazon Alexa through 1Home, covered below.
KNX with Apple Home, Google Home and Alexa
We are an official 1Home partner. The 1Home Server for KNX brings a KNX system into Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Samsung SmartThings and Home Assistant through Matter. It runs locally, so the house keeps working if the broadband drops, and there are no monthly fees. Our 1Home KNX page explains how it works.
KNX, Crestron or Control4?
KNX is a standard rather than a single brand, and it is at its best running the fabric of the house: lights, heating, blinds and sensors. Crestron and Control4 can sit on top of KNX through an IP interface, adding touch screens, music, cinema and video. As installers of Crestron, Control4 and KNX, we will tell you plainly which mix suits your home. Our home automation page compares the wider options.
When to plan a KNX system
KNX is a wired system, so the best time to plan it is before first fix on a new build, an extension or a major renovation, when the bus cable can run alongside the mains wiring. In a finished house we can still add KNX room by room with wireless KNX RF devices, or where cable routes allow. A design consultation early in the project saves cost later.
How a KNX project runs
- Consultation. We walk the plans or the house with you and agree what each room should do.
- Design. You receive drawings, a device schedule and an itemised online proposal.
- First fix. The KNX bus is run alongside your electrician's cabling, with every cable labelled.
- Second fix and programming. Devices go in and we programme the system in ETS, room by room.
- Handover. We show you how everything works and keep the documentation in your client portal.
- Support. 1Install Care keeps the system up to date, with most changes made remotely.

Questions we are often asked
What does a certified KNX Partner do?
A KNX Partner has completed the KNX Association's certified training and is listed as a partner. It means we design and programme KNX in ETS to the standard, and any other certified partner can read our work.
Is KNX expensive?
The price depends on how many rooms and circuits are controlled and which keypads you choose. Wiring KNX at first fix costs far less than adding it later. A design consultation is £360 plus VAT, as on our booking page, and the proposal that follows is fixed and itemised.
Can KNX be added to an existing house?
Yes, with care. Where walls and ceilings are finished we use wireless KNX RF devices or existing cable routes, and we can start with one floor or one system, such as lighting, and extend later.
Can I control KNX from my phone or by voice?
Yes. Through the 1Home Server, a KNX system appears in Apple Home, Google Home and Amazon Alexa, so you can use your phone, a smart speaker or a watch alongside the keypads.
Can another installer work on my KNX system later?
Yes. KNX is an open standard programmed in one common tool, ETS, so the system is not tied to us. Most clients keep us on through 1Install Care, but the choice stays yours.
Does KNX work with underfloor heating and heat pumps?
Yes. KNX room controllers and valve actuators run underfloor heating and radiators room by room, and many heat pumps and air conditioning units connect to KNX through an interface.
